Netanyahu Appoints Bennett as Defense Minister

In News Surrounding Israel by Chris Katulka

Israel is in a state of instability since there is still no government formed after the election last September. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s cabinet in the meantime has approved Knesset member Naftali Bennett of the New Right party as temporary defense minister. Bennett will replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has held the defense ministry role since last November when former defense minister Avigdor Lieberman resigned.

This is a strategic move by Prime Minister Netanyahu to keep Bennett and members of the New Right Party on his side. Nobody from Netanyahu’s party was thrilled about Bennett’s new cabinet position, but in Israel’s current state of politics, Netanyahu needs to work with anyone he can to try and potentially form a government for the people of Israel. They really need it right now.
