Closing In On Judea and Samaria

In News Surrounding Israel by Jesse King

Israel has powerful backing in its intention to annex parts of Judea and Samaria. The U.S. State Department has “prepared to recognize Israeli actions to extend Israeli sovereignty and the application of Israeli law to areas of the West Bank that the vision foresees as being part of the State of Israel.” This recognition still depends on Israel following through on its end of the Trump Administration’s Mideast Peace Plan; they must hold talks with the Palestinians to work toward a sovereign, demilitarized Palestinian state.

The U.S. has made it clear for a long time that it supports Israel’s right to the land in Judea and Samaria. The Arab League will likely have a problem with the decision, making U.S. support for Israel’s actions all the more vital. Though it hardly seems like the right time for politics during the coronavirus pandemic, this plan has been a long time in the making. It sounds like Israel’s plan to claim sovereignty over these lands is finally about to come to fruition. If so, the Palestinians’ best move would be to follow through on their end of the Mideast Peace Plan, too.
